Janitorial Discrimination
Working as a janitor part time to help pay for college, has allowed me to notice and experience personally some negative aspects
of human nature. Now I'm sure that whenever the term "janitor" comes to mind, you think of some low educated or
perhaps even unclean individual that is not exactly that high up on the ladder of importance. I guess I to was somewhat guilty
of this line of thinking in the past, that is until I started doing the work and getting to know the various janitors and
custodians in the school district where I work. Many of these individuals have their own businesses off the side, for example
one is a real estate dealer and another runs a very successful catering business. Not bad for uneducated morons right? These
are just several examples I could give you. Another thing that really gets to me is the way that the various custodial staffs
at the schools are perceived by the teachers, principals, etc. Many of them, though not all, have this "I am superior"
attitude about them. Rarely will they look you in the eye or acknowledge you, let alone give out a compliment for fixing something,
etc. Now since most of them have a masters or at least a bachelors degree, I found it hard to see how a person with so much
knowledge can still possess such a discriminating attitude towards others, on the simple basis of comparing their occupation
to theirs. It may be a stretch but I don't really see the difference between this line of thinking and that of feeling superior
to someone because they are a different race or religion then you. And remember this is coming form educated individuals,
people who should be above such ignorant and idiotic lines of thinking.
